    I just ordered some needle stoppers because I can’t find the ones that I bought a few years ago – I know they’re on a cord somewhere! I’m sort of at the point of what the heck, I’ll find them eventually! Probably right after the new ones arrive!

    Haha! Have you or Murphy ever looked and looked for something only to conclude that it already was gotten rid of at some previous and already forgotten time? I’ve done that! It’s an “oh, bother!” moment that at least serves to turn the place upside down, then only to be required to right it all again! Sheeesh….! At least I take those opportunities to thin the herd and deep clean the house. I admire you with your tidy bags for pick-up. I load it all into the cars and just drive crap to all corners of the county. All of the following go to separate places: books, clothes, animal supplies, glass, plastic, lumber, construction material, household chemicals, linens, old fabrics for shredding, usable fabric and yarn, dishes and dinnerware/stemware, old ink cartridges, old pharmaceuticals, old computers and devices, old mattresses, old wooden skids, not to the online unloading portals of Ebay and similar outlets. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to be a minimalist with a simple life. I am quite sure that I shall never know. At least not anytime soon. And I can’t be sure that I’d like it anyway.

    Not sure who else you live with, but blame the crap on them. It’s like blaming a fart on the dog. Poor Murphy doesn’t think that you’re a bad housekeeper. He thinks your tidy and a great little box packer!

      Wow, it sounds like you have great recycling where you are. Our trash pickup is good, but I like to send as much as I can to new homes, not landfills.

      Ach, I’ve done that where I give something away and don’t remember that I’ve donated it! You’re right that if we were minimalists, we wouldn’t have this problem. Not yet, but maybe someday…

      I think I’ll blame my mess on Murphy. Late at night he borrows my credit card and goes crazy on eBay. (In reality, I inherited most of this stuff. Now I just need the courage to give away what I don’t need.)

    Hi again,

    I don’t think we necessarily have great recycling where I’m located, it’s more about seriously availing myself to every option that is in existence to avoid the landfill. I seriously need a hobby, but here’s the run-down: 🙂

    • old fabrics that are clean and not usable are bagged and marked “shredding” and go to Goodwill. Here they move to a process where they are bundled and sold by the ton and Goodwill does receive money from even old clothes.
    • Old CDs and DVDs go to re-sell shops. They may only give me .50 cents for one item, but then they do move back into circulation to a new home.
    • books and other DVDs and CDs go the the local YWCA for their bookshop. The proceeds from these sales helps support literacy programs.
    • building material, old shower doors lamps and bath tile, wedi board (I just re-did my first floor bathroom), etc. go the the local Habitat for Humanity store to support housing initiatives in my local community.
    • wooden skids, old electronics, tvs, computers, etc. go to a local recycling facility that supports the community.
    • good quality clothes and household items go to my local charity shop.
    • yarn, and craft materials go to the local nursing home. I give them directly to the Activity Director.
    • I’ve been known to haul dirt to local “clean fill wanted” locations. Usually some person who is filling in and old swimming pool
    • Useable pet items go to the local Human Society. I’ve given toys and ridiculously expensive dog food (Royal Canin) because The Terrier let me know that food was crap.
    • I sell on Ebay and peddle larger items on facebook marketplace.
    • Have done yard sales, garage sales, and the ilk.
    • I gave a set of dishes to my local Benedictine Monastery to be sold at their annual flea market. I keep that contact for future reference. The sisters are a dwindling lot, but really quite sweet people. They have a trememdous turnout and the money goes to a good cause to support the community.
    • I donate old boxes in good condition to the local U-Haul store (full service location). In their lobby they have a “take-a-box/leave-a-box area. I’ve done both, taken and donated back. It’s a really great idea!
    • We also have curbside recycling, which is fairly limited (no glass, limited plastics and paper)
    • That’s really all I can think of at the moment. I’m sure I am missing some of what I’ve used in the past. This should help you to keep the landfills empty!

    Scanning the list almost all of these places that I recycle to are 501(3)(c) charities and are staffed by mostly volunteers who believe in a cause.

    Oh…and just a head’s up if you do go to a county fair I don’t think pets are allowed. Only service animals are permitted. Definitely check first. The reason is the diseases and restriction that even requiring vetting for the livestock being entered. These all require veterinarians (my dog’s one of the vets who donates her time; she is also a large animal veterinarian) to do the check-in and meet vaccination and health requirements. As an example, due to the Avian Flu, no poultry was at the show this year. Only their photographs, which was actually sort of funny and cute — Looking at a chicken’s good side in a glamor shot!

    Sorry this message is so long, but just wanted to let you know that I am one determined recycler; and it’s not always easy! Once you find your local charities and make a habit out of it, then it’s easy!

      I’m doing my best not to need these services (by simplifying), but these are great ideas for recycling!

      Ha ha! I would never take one of my boys to the fair, but it is fun to imagine what would happen if I did! 😂

      I am surprised at how some of the local animal shelters look down at economically priced per food donations. Your Royal Canin donation would likely have been met with an air of entitlement around here. (Little Terrier, I’ve not met a dog yet who likes that stuff! 😂)
