The watermelons in the garden are finally ripe enough to pick. While most of the other foods this year were pretty awful, the watermelons are amazing. I found one about the size of a softball to give to Murphy. He immediately declared it to be the best food ever and ate the whole thing, rind and all.
I tried to keep an eye on him, but Nature took its course when my back was turned.

Murphy has learned a trick from the whole incident. Now if he thinks I am taking too long to get him outside, he starts sniffing the leg of the chair that he peed on. Suddenly mom can move very quickly!

Not being able to eat a whole watermelon is a common complaint among friends. Maybe pocket watermelons are the way to go? 🍉
Add me to your friend list of this common complaint. I recently learned that the best way to cut watermelon for picnic crowd consumption is to make watermelon “soldiers”. Think of the British version of toast soldiers for soft boiled eggs served in a egg cups while still in their shells, except drippier (more drippy?). I still can’t get anyone to eat an entire watermelon; it’s not one of those competitive eating picnics (haha!), but they do eat more that way!
It would be so much fun if you would have made a video of Murphy devouring his single serve watermelon! I would put that on repeat and share and share such a video. People certainly monetize a whole lot less and flat out boring rubbish. Or worse, crappola masquerading as instructive or helpful. Meanwhile people just want funny entertainment. Murphy may be a star in the making!
Next summer, when you set up at the farmer’s market with the single serve watermelons, let me know. The Chambersburg Peaches are super-sized this year! Time to bring back common sense in fresh produce! Let’s make watermelon a hand fruit snack!
