I should have known something was wrong on Wednesday. Both mower batteries ran out right when I got near the garden. Then the string trimmer ran out of string. Did I take the hint and retire for the day? No, I re-threaded the trimmer, charged the batteries and powered on…into a nest of ground bees.
It didn’t take long before I was at Urgent Care getting prednisone and Benedryl injections. The photo is what the Benedryl shot did to me.

Now I am the latest, unhappy member of the Epi-Pen Club. I know I’m not the only one out there, but this is all very unfamiliar to me. I’ve had anaphylactic reactions before, but no one has taken me seriously when I talked about them. This time the doctors actually saw it, and I think their responses are freaking me out.
I picked up my pens at the pharmacy today, and I was surprised at how large they are. I’m trying to picture me carrying them everywhere I go. And then, where do you keep them so they are easy to get to? How do you know for sure when to use them? If anyone would like to share their experiences, I would be happy to learn.
For now the pens are still in their pharmacy bag sitting on my desk. I mean, if I ignore them, the problem will go away, right?

I’ll guard the door. No bees will get in here!

Murphy has been very attentive to me this week. I think he realizes I don’t feel well.

Oh no! 😥 Sometimes it doesn’t pay to get out of bed. I hope you feel better soon.
Murphy, keep loving on your mom and guarding the door to keep the bees away from your mom.
I know Bruce has some pretty bad allergies. Does he have to use pens at all?
I’m on the job, Julia! – Murphy
DEAREST LADY L
I AM SO VERY VERY SORRY I DO UNDERSTAND ABOUT IGNORING THE WARNINGS OF THE UNIVERSE !
SENDING MUCH LOVE AND GENTLE HUGS
AND NO TAKE NOTE IGNORING SOMETHING GOT YA INTO THIS MESS !!. A LITTLE WAIST BELT BAG WILL HOLD A PEN EASILY
AND YOU CAN MAKE ONE FROM SOME OF THE MATERIAL OFF CUTS YOU HAVE PLENTY OF AND I AM SURE YOU HAVE SOME VELCRO FASTENING STUFF TOO
MAKEW3 ONE PLAY IT SAFE.
LOVE AND GENTLY HUGSSS
A waist bag – that’s a good idea. Thanks!
The puppies and I send our love!
Oh wow! I am so sorry that happened to you!
I love your drawings, though. One dog making smart*ss comments while the others cower behind him. I often secretly suspect my dogs make fun of me.
Geordie made fun of me to my face. He had no shame. Murphy is kinder and seems to care that I don’t feel well I appreciate that!
Ooh, wise guy dogs at your house too! What kinds of thing do you think they say when your back is turned?
I have diverticulitis without inflammation, which sometimes causes gas. Not smelly gas, just a series of rapid teeny tiny farts. Romeo will run from the room in exaggerated fright, while Scruffy would make a big show of very obviously “investigating” the entire room pretending not to know where the sound came from. Smart alecks! Meanwhile, if my friend lets go with a very loud, very smelly manly fart, they will completely ignore it.
Oh dear, I have tears running down my cheeks from reading this! Who would have thought that dogs would have such a twisted sense of humor?!
It can be irritating! Like I said, my friend can let one rip that kills all the plants in the house and Scruff and Romey would be, “Whatever, dude.”
😂😂. I’m sorry you have that terrible ailment, but it does make for funny stories!
Scruffy & Romey, you two are a hoot…or a toot! 😆
As always, I enjoy your cartoon stories, but I am truly sorry to hear about the bee incident. We have been invaded by red wasps, and while I am not allergic, Randy is. Take care, and keep the epi pen close by. Better safe than sorry!
Ooh, I’m sorry! Are those the really big wasps? I send your husband my sympathy. It’s hard to find a balance between caution and fear.
I am sure that is true! Yes the big ones. They have been treated numerous times, but it does not seem to faze them. Ready to call the A Team.
Nuke ‘em!!
Omigosh! I have no allergies or experience to help you, but I will surely add insect bites and stings to the things I pray about on your behalf. I’m glad the doc finally took you seriously.
Aw, thank you! 🥲
Oh, so very sorry to hear this! 😦 So painful, so scary! 😦
I know of a lady who is allergic to bees, she carries her Epi-pens in a cross body (sling) bag around her waist, so her hands are free. That seems to work for her.
Please always have them with you when you go outside.
I’m looking forward to our cold autumn weather arriving…so all the sting-y, bite-y creatures will go on vacation, far far away.
I love that Murphy cares and is on guard…watching over you, and watching out for bees. Bless you sweet Murphy!
(((HUGS))) and ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I go to the trouble of giving Murphy a pill for flea protection so I don’t hurt the bees, and now these a**holes move in. Harrumph. I still like my regular bees – they’re cool – but I can’t wait for the Bee Guy to get here and send these jerks to Nasty Sting-y Thing Valhalla.
Yes, yet another reason to appreciate cold weather!
Oh no!!!!!!!! A few years ago, the Bear ran into a wasp nest while cutting down a bush. He was stung all over, his face blew up like a balloon. Would he go to urgent care? Of course not! I showed him a picture a few months ago and he was like, “oh shit!” Yeah, love, shoulda listened! I’m glad you got treatment!
(and when you said you’re a member of an unhappy club, my brain went somewhere we won’t talk about
Well, as far as I know I’m not part of that club…
This isn’t the first time I’ve had an anaphylactic reaction (like a Certain Someone I didn’t go to the ER). Now that I’ve actually sought care, I am all freaked out and depressed. Staying at home does had a psychological advantage.
I understand. I would be too. Hugs
