The Bookshelf

Gosh guys, not being able to see well recently has really made me think about the clutter i have in my life.

*

I mean, if I couldn't see, how could I even start to sort through books? Would I still want any of these/ Might someone come read them to me?

*

Some of these books were new when I go them. they were cutting edge research. Maybe a histlry major would be interested in the now. Or an archaeologist.

*

Some of these books were gifts, so they are very dear to me, yet if I am honest with myself, I will likely never read them again.

*

Humans are so ridiculously sentimental. I mean, we dogs destroy our toys all the tme and don't give it a second thought. Hush your mouth! Blue Puppy is a national treasure!

*

The thought of my overcrowded bookshelf weighed heavily on my mind, yet it was painful to consider giving away something as significant as a book. Still, I forced myself to start the difficult task and set aside a few volumes that I no longer needed.

Then I woke up.

Crap!!!

So sometimes you dream of the devil, and sometimes you dream about cleaning bookshelves? (Humans are so weird.)

I have more books than anyone probably should, but that doesn’t stop me from adding to the pile. The TBR pile was around 250 the last time I counted. 🙂 I have a very hard time giving away a book, although I’ve gotten better – if I didn’t love it, I can part with it. Books make me feel safe. I can escape the world in a book. I grew up across the street from the library – it was my second home till I moved away. Books have always been a huge part of my life. Don’t let anyone tell you you need to get rid of them.

Sadly, we are living in a moment where books are devalued and are even being taken out of circulation and “revised.” This is no time to get rid of them, unless you REALLY trust the recipient. I’m like everyone here, I have hundreds of books I’ll never read, but each is a treasure to me.

    I can relate!
Books have always been one of the life-blood things of living to me. I love books! I’ve always had too many. Ha! Even my dresser drawers that should’ve held clothes…are full of books, as are all the bookshelves in our home. 😮 😀 Books are hard to let go of…but…
about three years ago, I sorted through them all and donated some to family members, libraries and thrift stores. I do hope someone else will enjoy them and find meaning, or just joy, in reading them. 🙂

Years ago, people used to buy books, read them then box them up and give them to someone else who would then read them and pass them along. I ended up on several of these chains, and I had TONS of books around. I had them stored under furniture, in boxes, stacked in corners. It got so bad that I couldn’t find ones that I wanted, and I totally gave up trying to dust them. Finally I donated several (OK, many) boxes to the library, and it felt really good. I hoped that someone else would find joy in them as well.

With how handy the internet is, I find myself going there rather than grabbing my old reference books. I’m conflicted how much of the old ways I should hold onto and how much I should take advantage of technology to help keep a cleaner house. 🤷‍♀️

I am happy to hear that Toby isn’t the only pup to adore Blue Puppies!

It was incredibly hard for us to give up our books for the RV lifestyle. We gave them to friends, coworkers and donated the rest to the library for the whale of a sale. The books that we would read again, we bought an electronic version. My paper cookbooks are in storage. I could only give a few up.
