I Have Exciting News!

Happy Cairn terrier pup

Hello friends!

I have some big news. I found out about a really exciting opportunity. It was so wonderful that I selfishly kept the news to myself so that I wouldn’t end up competing with friends for this spot. There were lots of tests and counseling and even boring essays to write, and after everything…I was the one who was chosen!  I will be doing a really important externship. The only catch is that I had to move in order to take the position. In fact, I already started my new job last Monday.

Before I left, an orange butterfly came to tell me that I was accepted. A few minutes after I left, I came back as another orange butterfly to show Mom and Gma and Gpa that I was OK and liked my new job. The next day, I borrowed a robin body to come back for another visit, but I misjudged and flew into the door and killed myself. Sheesh. What a week I am having.

On Friday I tried visiting again, but it was only in the 30’s outside.  Butterfly bodies won’t work in those temps, but there was a boring, practical house fly body that would work.  So, I popped into the house and decided to grab a quick sandwich before delivering my message when – whack!  Yes, it has been quite a week.

When I arrived on the Other Side, it was as if I had just scored the winning touchdown.  There were so many gathered around to congratulate me and welcome me.  There were high fives and back pats and plenty of tail sniffs.  It felt good to be home.

The title for my new job is the curator of the MOH (Museum of Heaven).  Seeing as it is a museum for dogs, I believe the first room I will fill will be the Hall of Poo.  All the most creative piles throughout history will be gathered under one roof.  Oh, and instead of a Comment Wall, we will have a Marking Wall.  Go ahead.  Mark away.  Everyone will love to sniff your tidings.

Please don’t feel sad, friends.  I am happier than I have ever been. (If you want to though, you can make fun of Toby. I know I will.)

The Blessing of the Pets

Look at me! I'm getting blessed!

Look at me!  I’m meeting the Pope (as far as I know)!

Here's my butt!

Here is my good side.  Go ahead ladies, sniff away.

Several pets at the Blessing of the Pets

Who are these other dogs trying to steal my thunder?

A few weeks ago my folks took Toby to the church for the Blessing of the Pets.  So far it hasn’t worked; he’s still Toby.

Priest with baskets of donations for local shelter.

At the ceremony, they took a collection to help a local domestic abuse shelter.  It is one of the few in the country that allows victims to bring their pets with them.  My family made a large donation of food and supplies (that aren’t shown here) in Geordie’s name.  (Geordie is still with us, but he couldn’t make it to the ceremony.)

Handmade baby gifts for a collection at church.

In addition to the pet donation, I made a blanket/hat/bootie set to donate to help young moms with new families.  (I’m not sure why I keep making baby gifts.  I mean, the babies never write, and they hardly ever remember my birthday.)

Cruel trick dribble baby bottle

Perhaps this is why.  Look at this cruel “dribble” baby bottle!  Who would do such a thing?  Babies dribble enough as it is.  They don’t need to be pranked.

One, Two, Toby’s Comin’ for You….

Toby dressed in a striped sweater.

The striped sweater and long claws should be a give away of Toby’s Halloween costume this year.  As you can see from his expression, he is thrilled with this opportunity to dress up.

Hmm, while I don’t want you to fall asleep and risk meeting “Toby”, I would like to recommend reading Dream Our World.   Perhaps just “daydream” the boys’ world?

Dream Our World is available from Amazon.   It is a wonderful little adventure where Geordie and Toby spend a day at the art museum, viewing art through the eyes of a terrier.  Plenty of humor and “awww” moments along the way!

The Supine Not-Pine and a Canine

Today Toby and I went to the woods to spread some acorns we had collected.

Hand holding acorns

Remember this guy?

Tree growing although it has been knocked over.

Look!  It seems we have finally shamed someone into doing something!

Sideways tree is gone, and only tall grass remains

The removal must have been within the past week because no one had cut the tall grass that had grown around the trunk.

Tall grass where tree trunk had blocked mowers.

Initially I thought someone had pushed the trunk into the woods like I had, but it had been hauled away.

Cross section of cut trunk.

I would have liked to have taken a picture of the part of the tree that remains in the woods to show how huge this fellow had been, but I am allergic to all of the plants that grew up around it.  Maybe later when they die back I can return.

As you can see, Toby was his typically cooperative self.

Geordie didn’t go with us today.  My little guy hasn’t been feeling all that well.  I can see that the heat and humidity are getting to him, as is his arthritis.  I am hoping that the cooler weather will help him to feel better, but I suspect his time with us is short.  It has already been two years since his cancer diagnosis.  He has exceeded everyone’s expectations, but I can see that he is tired.

Although it hurts thinking of my Geordie leaving, I find myself hoping that another pup will come along to play with Toby and me and brighten our days.  Some say that once a pup crosses the Rainbow Bridge, he or she finds the perfect new companion for the earthly family.  No one can replace you, Geordie, but if you meet someone who would have fun with us, please send them our way!

Toby’s Prize

Sweet potato that Toby dug up in the garden

Toby had a special something

TOday that he found.

It was an orange tuber that was

Hiding in the ground.

He dug it up with his own paws

From its dark hiding place.

He showed it off to me and Mom

A huge grin on his face!

I wish I had the camera ready when Toby found this giant sweet potato (It was 9″-10″ long.)  .  I don’t think I have ever seen such a big smile on his puppy face.  This just reinforced to him that digging in the garden is great fun.

I am tempted to hide a few potatoes in the dirt and set him loose to find them.  If all goes well, the tilling should get done with very little effort on my part.

If you are wondering about Toby’s commentary on the Pollack picture, like most kids, he doesn’t appreciate abstract art.  He is saying, “Heck, I could do that!”

Toby Was Attacked

New puppy greets Geordie by jumping on him.

I am feeling lazy today, so I  borrowed a picture from Geordie’s past to help illustrate Toby’s day.

My little Toby is a rather timid guy who has a deep and abiding affection for his girlfriend.  Between her house and ours is a little terrier girl who has it in for Toby.  Over the weeks, her behavior has escalated.  At first she would just howl at him.  Later she crossed the street to head-butt him and do some growling.  Today she spotted us half a block away and chased after us before we could walk away.  Her teen human chased after her, but this little pup is a terrier and won’t come when called.  Ms. Crabby Puppy not only head-butted Toby and growled but bit him hard enough to make him yelp.  No blood was drawn, but come on.  This should not be happening.

Since Toby wasn’t hurt, I didn’t look into filing a report.  Also, I didn’t have any third party witnesses to back up my claims.  To Toby’s great dismay, we won’t be walking down that street any longer.  This doesn’t guarantee us safety from the little dog, though.  She was the one I walked home on the day of The Great Roundup, so she has been known to roam the neighborhood.

I guess Toby is going to have to make the ultimate sacrifice and find a girlfriend who lives on a different street.

Sad Cairn terrier looks out of door.

No one in the history of the world has ever been as sad as I am.

Loonies

Digital picture of Toby howling at the moon.

Awoo!

Loonies, they call us, who howl at the moon.

Our song starts at dusk, and we’ll howl until noon.

We like best to sing no particular tune.

You may as well join us; we’re starting up soon!

The Absconder

Whee! Aagh!

Today it was Toby’s turn to escape and run free through the clover.  I guess he saw what the little neighbor dog did and thought it seemed like fun.

True to his terrier nature, Toby absolutely refused to acknowledge me when I called him.  He had a grand time running all over the yard, peeing on plants and hunting chipmunks.

I finally caught the little stinker by opening the garden gate.  Toby can’t pass up a chance to eat dirt in the garden, so he streaked past me to get to his prize. I was thinking of making him wear a harness with a leash around the house like I did when he was little.  Instead, though, I may mix iron filings with his kibble and keep a giant horse shoe magnet by the door.  I find the idea more attractive.

I Killed It, Ma!

Cairn terrier stands over slain toy

As you can see, Toby is very proud of his hunting skills.

I could have used Toby’s killing skills in the garden.  That stinky garden bunny left me only half beans to try to pick for dinner. Then, he pooped out his half of the beans all over the pumpkin patch.  Perhaps I should be grateful for the fertilizer, but I used a very eco-friendly time-released one at planting and did not appreciate his ground raisins.

Next year, Toby, you are on bunny patrol.
