Somehow I can make my face blurry while sitting perfectly still!

We found a surprise in the mail this week. Murphy seems to have made friends with a cute little Mauzer online. He wanted me to let her know that he absolutely loves his treats. (He kept pestering me for more and more after I took these pictures.)

Reiko, your taste in biscuits is sublime! – Murphy

Find It

Hey new guy, wanna play a game? Sure. How do you play? You close your eyes and wait while I hide a biscuit. Then I'll all you, and you sniff till you find it. OK!

*

You're going to eat that whole box yourself, aren't you? Heck Yeah. Kidney Krisps are my favorite.

*

After all, what's he going to do about it?

*

Aw come on. Just give me the biscuit already!

I originally taught this game to Geordie. When Toby came along, I was worried that Geordie would understand the game better and get to the treats before Toby had a chance. Not. Toby caught on very quickly, and by Day 3 he was not only finding his biscuit but he was getting Geordie’s as well.

Without another dog to teach Murphy, it took him a tiny bit longer to catch on, but now he is ready to play every day. He is getting so good that I’m struggling for challenging hiding places for his treats.

A Happy Barkday

A smiling, happy Cairn terrier wearing a party hat.

Friday was my little man’s barkday, and what a happy pup he was!

My mom had the idea to take the boys to the store to pick out presents for them to celebrate Geordie’s birthday.  The trip would be part of the present.

Geordie tells his story:

While we were good in the car, that all went out the window when we got to the store.  TSC is an agricultural business that sells supplies for all sorts of animals from bunnies to dogs to horses and cows.  At this time of year they also sell chicks and ducklings to farmers.  We could smell all of that as soon as we got to the parking lot.  Woo hoo did we pull!  Mom made us pee before we went in, and Toby did a poo.  Then we FLEW into the store dragging our humans behind us.  First thing we did was meet a puppy black lab girl. Then we found the huge pallet of 100 lb bags of dog food.  Then…then….I pooped all over the floor.  Well, I was just so excited!  We continued to do our best impressions of sled dogs as we tried to break all of the glass lawn decorations foolishly placed out where we could get to them.  (We failed).  When we got to the checkout, the cashier gave us biscuits, so I guess we weren’t too naughty.

Mommy says:  I am hoping that the ears the boys got as their presents keep them quiet so I can maybe get some work done and grab something to eat.  That will be MY part of the gift this year!

Find the Biscuit

100_1892 (800x600) - Copy

Coming up with activities to keep Geordie occupied during his first winter proved to be challenging.  He never has been the type of pup to play by himself.  He would much rather have someone else there with him.  (This can be exhausting when your puppy is awake 20 hrs a day!)   Our family dog loved to play “Find the Biscuit” and would search and search until he found every treat we had hidden.  Hoping to buy myself a few minutes of peace and quiet, I introduced Geordie to the game.

Since Geordie wasn’t good at Sit/Stay yet, I had my Mom hold him in one room while I hid a biscuit in another.  After we released him to search, we sat down where we could see him and had a chat.

Geordie searched for a few minutes, then came over to my Mom, made eye contact, and made a noise that had the cadence of “I dunno”.  He clearly wanted her to tell him where his treat was.  Without gesturing, she said, “It is over on the register, behind the end table”.  Geordie paused for a moment to think, got an “Aha!” look on his face, then ran behind the end table to the register and grabbed the biscuit.   The two of us were completely stunned.  Until now, we had no idea that this little 8 month old puppy had the linguistic skills to understand that sentence.   So surprised, we kept jumping around yelling, “He knew what we were saying!  He understood!”

We didn’t realize it, but that was the first indication that we had a puppy Noam Chomsky on our hands.

Biscuit Dust

Geordie is really fond of Breath Buster biscuits, and when he finished a package all that remained were very fine crumbs.  Since he liked the biscuits so well, I figured he would enjoy the crumbs, so I poured them into his bowl and let him help himself.

Biscuit Dust 1

I didn’t give it another thought until later I saw him sitting up on his haunches, using his paws like a bunny washing her face.  What?!?  Geordie doesn’t wash his face that way!  Upon investigation, I found that the biscuit dust I had given Geordie had turned into a paste and stuck securely to the roof of his mouth.  I wanted to use my finger to gently dislodge it for him, but he would not let me put one in his mouth.  (The look on his face said that he thought I was going to try to take the food from him.)

Hmm…what can I use?  I know, his toothbrush!  I grabbed his toothbrush (and promised him that could still eat the food) and carefully pried the paste loose.  I thought it was interesting that Geordie would allow a tool in his mouth (but not a hand), and it made me grateful that I had gotten him used to it.

Today’s lesson: if you give your puppy biscuit dust, make sure it is in tiny quantities so it doesn’t stick to his mouth.
