Castor Oil

Hmm it says here that using castor oil can help regrow hair. I'll have to try that.
A few weeks later...
Do you guys have any idea what happened to my castor oil? Haven't a clue. No idea what you're talking about.

My aunt told me about this nearly a year ago, and I have been using it ever since. That is what I credit for my dandelion fluff new hair.

This secret is why my fur is always so thick and luxurious.

Does Mommy Still Love Me?

Do you think mommy still loves me even though I barked all day?
Of course she does. She has to. It's like, in her contract or something.
Just look at her. She's smiling. She must be happy.
I should sit here for my picture? OK! Free to a good home. Are you sure there are biscuits in here? Woo hoo! i can't wait to see what my surprise is!

No, I never think such things.

You’d better not. I know where you live.

Bear Paw Quilt

Last night got cold enough for frost for us. If you are in a similarly global-warming-challenged climate, and your single puppy dog on the bed isn’t enough to keep you warm, consider adding this rustic Bear Paw Quilt to your nights. By adding an extra layer of bedding, not only will you save on heating costs but by conserving fuel, you won’t be contributing to next year’s unbearably hot summer. (Unless there’s a volcano, then all bets are off.)

This Bear Paw Quilt and many other fine gifts are available from my shop at L Bowman Studios.

Cotton Balls

What happened to you? Did you lose a fight with a bag of cotton balls?
Actually, that would have been more fun.

Today I got to experience nerve conduction testing. While not as bad as I was expecting, it still wasn’t much fun. Basically they stick needles into your muscles (while insisting that you remain completely relaxed as they do!) then ask you to flex so that they can check how your nerves and muscles are working. Some times they shock you with electricity (probably mostly for amusement). Where they stabbed me in the back, I developed some colorful goose eggs. I take turmeric, which acts as a blood thinner, so I ended up with cotton ball band-aids all over.

The take away? I can add Lou Gehrig’s Disease to my list of things I don’t have.

Another “you” post? This is getting boring.

Woof, Woof Brown Dog

Woof, Woof Brown Dog

Have you any stool?

Yes sir, yes sir,

Five bags full!

Two for my mother.

Two for my bro

And one for the chippy-munk

who runs to and fro!

Oh dear heavens, where did you come up with the idea for such an awful poem?!?

Terrier looking up at basket of green beans.

Well, it is that time of year again. After a late start, the beans started coming in like crazy. Toby loooves green beans and begged and stole and whined and howled until he was finally full.

I am a very effective howling beggar.

The next day’s “end result” inspired today’s poem. (It’s your own fault for stopping by today!)

It’s hard to believe it is back to school season already. Some youngsters I know only had one day of class before catching the latest bug going around. Whether it is a virus or allergies, having a reusable handkerchief can save both your nose and the planet!

Ewwww

Fresh Hell

Oh what fresh hell is this? I've read that people can get psoriasis on their nether regions, but I hoped it would never happen to me! I know something that might help with the itching.
This doesn't help at all! Yeah, tell me about it.
Hey, get out of there!
That's not psoriasis. Those are ant bites on your butt. Hmm, now that you mention it, I might have sat on an ant hill when I was working in the garden.
Sheesh. Humans. They'll complain about anything. Yeah, I agree. By the way, do your paws itch?

When I was diagnosed with psoriasis, I never thought of all the places it could show up. Finding out psoriasis can hide where no one can see seemed like a particularly awful fate. Thank heavens this was only a run in with some angry ants.

If you wanted someone to bite your butt, you should have let me know.

I already bite your underwear.

Animal Crackers and Raisinets

Hey, is that a cake? Can I have some? No, this is going to the church for their Mercy Meals.
What are you doing with those Animal Crackers and Raisinets? Making sure this is the last cake mommy makes that I don't get to eat!

Let’s see if church people mind cookie bears “pooping” on their cake.

I assure you, I wouldn’t mind!

Out of curiosity, I asked Toby if his little pig were a boy or a girl. Once again I guessed wrong; the pig is a boy. I guess it was the pink that threw me.

Dig in the Garden

Mom! Mom! Can we go dig in the garden? I'm sorry guys, but I've already started planting. You won't be able to dig out there for a while.
Oh whoa is us! We are the saddest puppies in the whole world! That's not how you spell "woe". Be quiet. We're upset. We never get to have any fun. At all. Ever!
Hey wait, what are you two doing with my shoes? Don't worry about it.

She’s a fool if she thinks she is going to keep me from my dirt!

This is the latest I’ve ever been putting in the garden, but Toby doesn’t appreciate the extra digging time he had. All he sees is that fence between where he is and where he wants to be. Poor evil beastie. He is in for several weeks of disappointment…well, till the beans come in.

What can I say? I am a sucker for green beans.

Love Train

.
Watch where you're going you little runt! There ain't no stoppin' the Love Train, baby!

This used to happen a lot when the boys were together. Toby would ride his peppermint backward around the room until he inevitably ran into sleeping Geordie’s face. I would say, “And a good time was had by all” but Geordie would probably bite me.

For all the romantics like Toby out there, Happy Valentine’s Day!

Toby, do you have something you want to tell me? No.

Geordie Does Flashcards

Baby Geordie was a dynamo with more energy than I knew how to deal with. When I took him to dog school, they recommended that during the winter, we humans get a book of tricks and keep our pups busy indoors during the bad weather. Geordie learned every trick in the book (literally) so quickly that I had to make up new ones to keep him busy. One thing I tried was flashcards.

I didn’t know if a dog could learn to read or not, but I thought I would give it a try. I started out with The letters A and G because they looked dissimilar. I told him “A as in Adventure”* and “G as in Geordie”. He quickly learned those, so I kept adding more.

Again, I didn’t know if he might eventually sound out words like little humans do or if he would learn each word as its own unique symbol. In case it was the first way, I taught him phonetically. It turned out the second way, though. When you see Geordie’s flashcards, it will look like I don’t know how to spell.

I don’t have a YouTube account, so I posted a video of Geordie doing flashcards on my website. Geordie Doing Flashcards. It is at the bottom of the page if you keep scrolling. (In the photo to the left of it, I am holding the cards for “jump” and “kitty”.)

Over the years, we built up quite a huge stack of flashcards, and Geordie learned an astonishing number of concepts. Rather than using “dog language”, Geordie preferred to use English. He insisted I teach him the word for everything in his environment.

Whenever I mention Geordie talking to me or telling me something, I don’t mean a Son of Sam scenario. If Geordie wanted to tell me something, he would poke me in the leg to get my attention. Then he would make eye contact, heave a big sigh, sit down and stick out his lower teeth. At that point I would start asking him questions, and he would either nod yes or shake his head no or he would point to something (indicate direction or gesture toward an object) or he would tap one of those cards. So many people were surprised when they would ask Geordie a question, and he would answer. Around here he was known as Geordie the Talking Dog.

Before I got sick and my world fell apart, I had studied to be an English as a Second Language teacher. I never got the opportunity to teach humans, but working with Geordie allowed me to use many of those skills.

I don’t need words to tell you I like pumpkin!

  • I realized early on that Geordie picked up on English very quickly, so I never talked to him about “Going for a ride” or “Going in the car”. I didn’t want to accidentally perk his ears up. Instead I used the word Adventure which I rarely use in general conversation.
